Clearing Customs: The Final Hurdle
Your goods have arrived at the destination port — but they're not yours yet. Customs clearance is the final step before delivery.
Step 1: Hire a Customs Broker
A licensed customs broker handles the clearance process on your behalf. Fees: $100-300 per clearance. Provide your broker with all shipping documents (B/L, invoice, packing list, CO).
Step 2: Submit Customs Declaration
Your broker files the declaration with correct HS codes. Incorrect classification is the #1 cause of delays. Penalties for misclassification can be severe.
Step 3: Pay Duties and Taxes
Pay import duties (0-25% depending on HS code), VAT/GST (varies by country), and any applicable anti-dumping duties. Payment is typically required before goods are released.
Step 4: Inspection and Release
Customs may physically inspect your goods (random or targeted). If everything is in order, they issue release. Goods can then be picked up for final delivery.
